I am seeing where there are world wide demonstrations against high oil going on today and china increase prices on oil to reduce consumption. Perhaps this would be the appropriate time for the US to release some of the strategic reserve and say this is being done for the benefit of the world economic system, not just US consumers. Oil is down $3 on china news, perhaps such a release could break the back of the speculators.
After todays debate, i have come to believe that i was right last week not today and that $140 oil will break the world economy and cause hardship and that this needs to be taken care of first before we launch a world-wide effort to reduce the dependence on oil. No wonder the Saudis freaked last week. They see whats coming.

Most people believe that fuel will be either hydrogen or electricity. Hydrogen is produced using electricity so it really means that congress needs to start permitting the construction of electrical plants everywhere. Since everyone wants clean energy that implies wind, solar, geo and nuclear.

Electricity can replace other sources, which is why it is so important to have plentiful capacity, and cheap prices. At certain price, it makes more sense to use electricity for heating homes. Right now, oil is the main source (and also natural gas).

So getting electricity to the price point where it is cheaper than oil, a good chunk of oil consumption can be phased out...
