OK. Well, I don't think the argument works in that case then.

The survival by adaptation of the bacteria species was not an operant in the lab conditions. It was cultured to change and mutate until some beneficial mutation surfaced.

The theoretical evolutionary premise behind diversity of species is survival by adaptation, though mutations that are more beneficial wrt the changing circumstances.

I'm still not clear about what the claim is supposed to accomplish or settle wrt the argument over diversity.
