>>Most educated people I have met, who believe the universe is a creation, also believe scientific principles are an aspect of creation we are still learning about, the principles that can be better understood via experiments like Lenski's. Coynes comment was unnecessarily bigoted.<<

There are different stripes of creationists. What about the people who say that the Earth is six thousand years old? Or the many people who believe promote the idea of Intelligent Design, who come up with specific things that they say are not possible within the framework of evolution as we know it today?

This is a specific example of one of those things such people have said were not possible. Thus, while Coyne's statement may have been overly broad, I think it's reasonable.

"Creationist" typically means someone who denies biological evolution as a a sole or prime mover behind the diversity of species.

I suppose one could be a "creationist" who thinks that God directly created the world, with a lot of different life forms already on it, and then from that point there was significant evolution of new species, but I don't think that particular combination of beliefs is very common, or what most people are talking about when they use the word "creationist".

One could certainly believe that the universe was a divine creation, and agree with modern biological beliefs, including biological evolution, but that definitely is not the common meaning of the word creationist.
