You have found a scape goat in an inanimate object - an SUV - but it is only a small part of the overall puzzle.

Of course it's not just the SUV but any gasoline inefficient vehicle.

I thought you were. I rent minivans or SUVs sometimes, when I go to ski or when I have more people in the car, or when I am moving something large, normal sized cars when I am not doing anything out of ordinary. You seem to be saying that it is entirely illegitimate thing to manufacture and sell these large vehicles, and there should be only small, more efficient cars...

You haven't been paying attention to what I'm saying. People can choose to drive whatever they want, but driving inefficient vehicle is raising the cost of gasoline for everyone, even the people who drive efficient vehicles. So the people who choose to drive inefficient vehicles would pay the true cost in the form of a tax, which will be then used to subsidize efficient vehicles. And make the fleet more efficient.

People use these larger vehicles to make deliveries (for living - with their seats down or out, SUVs and minivans have decent cargo space) and use it for personal uses as well.

90% of the time the behemoths are used to move one person from point A to point B, really stupid use of a precious commodity. And as you said on the rare occasions they need a larger vehicle they can rent.

Besides, this is USA, not Soviet Union. People don't have to justify to the government the choices they make. They (should) have to live with the consequences of their choices...

The government regulates 100's of things about your vehicle. Get over it.
