They are also conveniently ignoring, assuming that they even know, that shale oil is not petroleum.

The effect of it is the same; it yields a perfectly acceptable fuel, and that is what matters.

As to the extraction problems, with oil at $100+, it is totally economically feasible. And the extraction process is not, as JFS is trying to claim, some kind of ultra-expensive, ultra-complex process.

Sure, it is more difficult than sticking a pumpjack on a hole in the ground. But if the government will make the land available, there is no doubt that production will ramp quickly.
