The last time we had a major outage I dug deep and bought a generator capable of powering pretty much the entire house.

I was looking at a couple small Honda generators, one for the freezer and refrigerator in the detached garage and another small one for some lights and entertainment. Then with the propane stove and heat we could all stay upstairs and weather the nine day outage we had last year.
