Hear hear on the tax proposal. That was my argument in 1985 when my boss Nelson Cull and I were discussing Greenhouse Effect woes. He quite rightly pointed out that it wouldn't result in increased profits for BP Oil so it wouldn't be ideal for BP. People would very rapidly start using anything but oil; such as insulation, cyberspace, phone calls, carriers, bicycles, buses, tiny vehicles etc.

Also, the amount of tax which could be collected wouldn't come close to replacing all the taxes such as GST [goods and services tax]. People moan about the cost of fuel, but it's still a small part of their total expenses. With half of income going on tax, the price of fuel would have to go astronomical to keep government revenue constant.
