I am visiting India for Summer. Yesterday official inflation numbers are at 11.05%, jump from some 8.75% and analysts were expecting 9.75% or so (this is assuming food dropped 1.1%, and food prices don't look anywhere near dropping). The media is all over this; the reserve bank is way behind the curve with rates; it almost seems the Indian govt is not doing as good a job at hiding inflation numbers as other sovereign govts. The prices are runaway and I have observed this since I have landed here a week back, the real estate is out of the roof and beyond middle class as in many areas in US, only folks with fat salaries with IT jobs re able to afford it somehow; my suspicion is that the rates here are going up and economy will start cooling; nobody expects Sensex to break below 14200 support, they have been fed the bullshit that Indian economy is insulated from US and other world economies, think that means it will likely do so. It almost seems that the break in global reflation is at hand as some govts start showing real inflation numbers, we will likely head into a global slowdown; how bad it gets is hard to say because financial recklessness, although strongly prevalent with soverign govts and its masses, is still asymmetric between different govts and will likely start cracking the nice game that has been going on for years.

Destroying the Dollar on the Path to War

Fri, 06/20/2008 - 13:46 — manystrom
If you haven't seen Dr. Paul's first video interview on the Campaign for Liberty's YouTube channel, it is worth four minutes of your time for insight into how our government functions in these days of Empire. In it, Dr. Paul explains the upcoming vote on the monstrous $187 billion emergency supplemental funding bill. Because of its status as an "emergency supplemental" bill, it is not counted in the official US budget (which is currently running a $400 billion deficit) and thus not subject to ordinary budget rules.
Think about this for a second. A budget is a way to keep track of spending. Companies have them, families have them and individuals have them. Governments should have them. After all, it is our money - the money of the Citizens of the United States - that they're spending. Having a budget is a way of showing respect and responsibility over the stewardship of the nation's wealth. But on the contrary, the way Congress is behaving shows a positive lack of respect for, or even understanding of our money and the long-term well being of our republic.
As Dr. Paul explains, this particular bill began with the president asking for $107 billion to continue the war in the Middle East. First, why is this an "emergency?" Haven't we been fighting this war for over five years now? Shouldn't this money be budgeted and accounted for like any other expenditure? Ours is a two party system - where is the opposition party to keep this kind of irresponsible activity in check? The opposition party in question - the Democrats - did nothing to stop this, or even reduce the amount. Instead, they piled right on with the attitude, "If you're going to spend money, we're going to spend money too!" War spending increased to $165 billion, with an additional $25 billion thrown in for domestic spending. The controversial language of winding the war down and bringing the troops home somehow got cut. (Who says Democrats are against war?) This is the two parties' idea of compromise: No cutbacks in spending -- increases in spending across the board.
But where does all this money come from? Your taxes won't go up. Actually, the government is even paying you back for being a good, complicit - not citizen - consumer. Did you get your money from the government yet? Did you go out and consume something?
While we may not pay for war directly with our taxes, we will all pay indirectly through the inflation tax. What we cannot pay we will saddle our children and grandchildren with, through a drastically reduced standard of living. Four-dollar gas is just a hint of what is in store. The politicians may try to hide the inflation tax from us, but they cannot hide the fact that prices are going up everywhere, thanks to our ever-weakening dollar. The federal government has long been subsidizing the burning of food through ethanol subsidies, and with the recent floods in the Midwest, food prices across the board are set to increase.
Though Dr. Paul does not discuss it in this video, another house resolution is calling for a naval blockade of Iran.
A US House of Representatives Resolution effectively requiring a naval blockade on Iran seems fast tracked for passage, gaining co-sponsors at a remarkable speed, but experts say the measures called for in the resolutions amount to an act of war.
War with Iran before the election? It is looking increasingly like a possibility. If you think gas is expensive now, just think of how it will skyrocket if full-blown war erupts in the Middle East. Think of how expensive it will be to distribute our already expensive food across the country. Think of what it will cost to heat your home come winter. And think of how much Congress will spend to authorize another war, this time against Iran. All of this will send the dollar plunging even further, not to mention the senseless loss of lives around the world. Common sense says more war will be a disaster for the United States - why isn't the government listening?
What Has the Government Done for You Lately?
For a long time, we've left the running of the country up to professional politicians, and now we are reaping what they have sown. It is high time that We the People get back involved and right what has been wronged. Many of us don't even know who our own congressional representatives are, what they stand for, or how they are voting, but this is an excellent place to begin educating ourselves. Dr. Paul will be keeping us informed of important votes and his positions via regular video updates at the Campaign for Liberty YouTube channel.
Most of us don't live in Ron Paul's district - Texas 14 - but we see him as our true representative in Congress. At least we know we have one honest seat in the House that truly represents Liberty. The goal of the Campaign for Liberty is to vastly increase that number.
Because of the knowledge that we have - much of it gained over the past year and a half - we have a greater responsibility in restoring our republic. The country is in dire straits and needs all of our assistance. No one is going to do it for us, but working together, we can do it ourselves.
Please join the Campaign for Liberty.
