A value in the ground today for coal of good thermal quality would appear to be 7 to 8 dollars a ton easily. I am saying this based on gold which can safely be valued at 50 dollars an ounce.

The burning question is how many tons. I am prepared to discount a billion tons as there are too many unanswered questions as to the continuity sans no outlying holes. Thickness may go to 3 metres safely and still be a resource, but the variance while seemingly low is not yet totally known. While we have mystery we can only dream in a frustrated way.

A mine in USA or Canada is from 300 million to a billion tons. Lotsa bucks in that. While the politicos talk about carbon sequestration we have to accept that the USA used 1 billion tons of coal for electricity in 2007. But power usage is growing. Most coal on long term contracts for power sold for about 48 bucks a ton in the US in 2007.
