Why is that important? Is there not freedom of religion in this country?

It has nothing to do with freedom of religion - Obama or anyone else is free to practice Islam without interference in this country.

But most Americans are not ready to accept a Muslim as president, and with good reason. The religion is highly violent, highly oppressive, and is generally inconsistent with the American way of life.

It doesn't matter, though -- it is clear that Obama's commitment to ANY religion would be fleeting, at best, and subject to being thrown under the bus at the slightest political complaint.
