>>in the dead of winter, on the shortest day, barely light yet<<

Longest day of the year here, with various summer solstice happenings. Sunset around midnight, sunrise around 4:30 AM. Night just a long twilight... biking along the coastal trail, distant snow-capped mountains across the water, flocks of swallows catching mosquitos, a red fox trotting past.

Rain today, but pleasant cool sunny weather yesterday. Blokes practicing their bagpipes in the neighborhood park. Lilacs, chokecherries, and Manchurian plums still blooming, but past their peak. Rumpled mommy moose shedding their winter coats, out in the open now with their two-week-old calves. The cute little ones all gangly and wide-eyed, taking in the sights.

Oh yes, the asparagus is finally up!
