Perhaps somebody in the medical field can correct me if I'm missing something.

Despite all the explanations, it's a horrible case. White Doctors experimenting on poor blacks in the South at the height of segregation. All the talk in the world won't stop it from being exploited by someone like Wright. All we can do is agree and let it go.

Tuskegee is one of Wright's favorite Jeremiads. Very popular among the America-hating circles. While at some point the study did evolve into something that would be considered controversial and unacceptable by today's standards, it did not involve infecting healthy people - which is what commentators on the fringe routinely claim. Repeat a lie enough times, and it may sink in.
