Unemployment has been calculated the same way for decades.

Only the Democrats want to change the metric to suit their own self-fulfilling "recession" prophecies.

possibly , but keep in mind that the govt, esp. this current administration has been farting around with the unemployment rate and it probably is currently over 8%, when you adjust for all the people they no longer count.

The complaint about unemployment tracking has been around a lot longer than Bush has been president. Having said that, I think unemployment is not going up that much because of the fact that business inventories remain low, causing firms to hold onto their employees. That leads me to believe we can still avert disaster but the chances grow slimmer with each passing day.
