For 23 combat missions (an estimated 20 hours over enemy territory), the U.S. Navy awarded McCain a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a dozen service medals.

Do watch this video, nothing out of the ordinary, a regular day for John McCain.

Nope. That's the truth. McCain was shot down and captured very early in his combat career. Reputedly, he wasn't much of a flyer and no one wanted to fly with him.

His whole "war hero" shtick kind of falls apart on close examination, just with the facts that are out there. Which is probably why he refuses to sign his form 180 releasing his entire military record.
