China needs access to resources as you say. They are going to have to become politically and militarily active on a global scale to ensure that access. If the US appears to be taking over the world's oil supplies, China is unlikely to sit idly by and watch it happen. They are the up and coming superpower, while the US is spending itself into oblivion.

If I had to guess I would predict that in 10-20 years China will be like we were 10 years ago and we will be like France is today.
