It used to be "what's good for General Motors is good for America". Now GM is worth not much more than QCOM's cash stash. The USA is certainly not dependent on it. Toyota is producing a LOT in the USA.

General Electric grew mightily.

The big issue being dealt with is debt. General Electric is involved with a lot of debt. Qualcomm isn't. Bear Stearns was more like GE than QCOM. Shareholders of BS were taken to the cleaners.

Admittedly I know almost nothing about GE, but the little I do know would make me learn a lot more before going on a buying rampage.
