Those that control energy have control over everything. The problem with alternative energy is one cannot gain control over the sun and the wind so switching to it will be fought every step of the way. In case there is anyone here interested in reading and posting, the is a Politics of Energy thread... Subject 57143 It's mostly inhabited by right wing folks. And yes, it's hard to compete with the most profitable industry in the world.

But one can control the best spots for sun and wind. It will be hard to control the best spots for sun, but in the long run it will take nearly a Mojave full of solar panels to power the country. From a wind perspective, there are two big hot spots. South Dakota and Texas have the best spots in the U.S. In Peru there is another hot spot, but it is remote. The South East coast of Africa is perhaps the most productive spot for wind, as the wind has gone almost all the way around the world before reaching Africa and is fairly consistent. If energy companies could view it in these terms, then it is just like oil. Except with alt energy, one does not have drill a bunch of holes and hope their geological surveys were right. With wind and sun, the best spots are very obvious.
