I lived in Iowa City for 5 years back in the late 70s early 80s. Wonderful party town with a ratio of 2:1 female/male ratio. Out of all the places I've lived and there's been a bunch, I found Iowans to be at the top of the list when it comes to warmth and generosity.

I got my first taste when I initially pulled into IC with 50 bucks in my pocket. I spent the first night in my car. The next day I had a room in a little house that this student owned. The student agreed to let me slide on rent for several weeks. In a week I had a job building prefab condominiums that I kept for 2 years. In a month I had a circle of friends I felt I had known for years...... It's hard to find places with people as nice and real.

Fortunately some of the residential housing in town is on a hill but the rest of the area is rather low lying and without a doubt most of the U of I was flooded.

You see these clips in the news of some of these flooded towns and you see people pulling together. Even though they've been devastated you don't see fear or defeat in their eyes, you see grim determination. Quite a contrast to Katrina and New Orleans.
