There is a lesson here for the astute.

The other part of the lesson is that in the past, the American government has been prone to hyperbole, and so must not be taken at its word.

I think the gummint should give up on terrorists and fear-monger us with space aliens bent on frying Earth to a charred raisin!
All of Earth would need to come together to repel the threat! i-node and Ted, pulling together, shoulder to shoulder! We could have a "Manhattan project" to get us into space in a big way.
