Departing Aliens are meant to submit a form, which I didn't as I assumed they couldn't be bothered about that kind of thing with all the tax cheats that they aren't even going after. On my 2007 US Federal Return I wrote a cover letter saying I didn't intend to submit a tax return in future and they just took the money I calculated and haven't contacted me since. My wife did at least get a "stimulus check" to help stimulate the Australian economy.
