Look into the borohydrate fuel cell. Very promising. Borohydrates right now are too expensive but mass production will bring price down to near fuel costs today. Acres of borohydrates in the SW. Borax.

Also the KOH fuel cell can be made non poisoning if it is made flow thru. Stuff is as cheap as water anyway. The K2CO3 blockage problem is being worked on. There is your billion dollar patent. Invent a membrane that does not block with potassium carbonate or at least can flush it. Alternately flushing cells may be the trick. Downside, while cheap, the cell need H2 to work. And air/flowthru KOH or super pure oxygen. sheesh!

Best way for the home guy to get hydrogen is to reform it at home and in the process make electricity. I wonder if you can reform it with a stirling engine? hmmm....

Making hydrogen from electricity and water is distressingly expensive. (slow, low returns, better stuff to do with your electrons.) Heat wawa to 1800 degrees and then electrolize it on osmium.. that is the way to go. Cheaper really. Use sun furnace to do it.

Then store the hydrogen in iron chips or zeolites and heat it to evolve. Process works in Germany in buses today.
