Then why is he afraid to go up against McCain?

I have no idea but I highly doubt that fear of McCain is the motivator. My God, while McCain is trying to make one sentence, Obama will have covered two or three paragraphs. McCain's mother is a more dynamic speaker than he is.

Why wouldn't McCain agree to longer town hall meetings?

Obama's ahead in the polls, ahead in money, he doesn't have to do anything that might help the geezer McSame. McSame is comfortable in those town hall type situations, he's done them ALL the many times he's run for president and lost. Obama would crush him in them too, but why even give McSame a situation where he feels comfortable?

McSame is like a fish out of water in debates. I'm sure Obama will have many televised debates with McSame. No scripts or teleprompters there! He'll have to be careful not to humiliate him too badly, not to look mean, like he was taking advantage of an old man who's powers have left him.
