I made an interesting and wonderful discovery today. As I sat at my computer looking out towards our small orchard, I noticed a squirrel climbing up the trunk of the Macintosh apple tree. I didn't think much of it since the apples aren't anywhere near ripe, but told myself I had to find a way to keep them out when they do ripen. All of the sudden I see three little baby apples come falling down from the tree, almost as if they were being thrown. Then I see that squirrel climb down the trunk with one of those baby apples in his mouth running like crazy across the yard before the dog caught site of him.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh was I angry, but at the same time relieved.

For years we'd get lots of little apples on that tree, but come late summer very few were left, and we were stumped........until today.......as to why it would set several apples in the spring, only to lose them all by the time we should have been enjoying them in full ripeness.

I made a phone call to the spouse and told him what I'd just witnessed. He stopped at the hardware store before coming home, and put some sheet metal around the trunks of all of our fruit trees. I don't know if that is going to work, and there is a tall hedge bordering our property they could use as a springboard to access those fruit trees. But I think we have a solution for that? I'll be watching and waiting in case they do.

In the mean time I'm thinking of all the ways I can use those apples come Autumn.

I hope you did not cook or clean and was treated like a Queen on your birthday.
