Energy-driven urbanism. We have walls around our houses in Brazil for security reasons. It doesn't matter who lives in the neighboring properties because we are secluded.

Good fences makes good neighbors.

In the US, with the fenceless properties, you need to distantiate your selves from your neighbors by using wider lots. That results in people living too far from each other.

But need: school, milk and bread, screws and a tool, dispose of trash, extra activities such as gym, swim lessons, bars to drink a beer, places for teenagers to dance and sports areas for play sports.

ll that need transportation. Thus that life-style is expnesive.

Wife wnet to play tennis, by car, maid arrived by foot, her bicycle broke down (she is very fit this my wife's maid I can tell you :-).But it is all near by no need to go too far.

Neighborhood-commerce they call here. People living more close together are economically viable to put the commerce near the people. They call here Neighborhood-commerce.

We have gas station, private school, pizzeria, and video rental, wood for fire place and dog food. Car parts, construction materials shop, news stand, ice cream parlour.

Big super market needs car since it is not that convenient located since it needs bigger area and more strategic located place.
The neighborhod commerce was derived from expensive and time consuming moving to go and come back. One woman can leave the food pot on the stove and go and come back. If on a hurry doesn’t have time to go too far.

Brazilians are lousy planners. Thus go buys spaghetti and forget minced meat. Thus butcher shop must be located nearby.

Last two decades with expensive cars and costly fuel created that city built around cost of going and coming back
