<<Paulson said on Tuesday that the global economy was being strained by costly energy but said U.S. economic fundamentals were sound.>>

I wouldn't rely on anything Paulson says. What's he going to say - the country's economic fundamentals have deteriorated to the point that bankruptcy is a real possibility? Our future liabilities and huge debt load far exceed our ability to pay for it all? Nope, Paulson is merely chief cheerleader and jawboner. As for Greenspan I wouldn't rely on his ability to predict a recession. When he was confirmed, the statement was made by a frustrated senator to the effect, I'm concerned about your economic forecasting record, but I guess you can't be wrong forever. Greenspan and Paulson are politicians too - don't put much trust in what they say IMO.
