The middle and lower middle class pay a LOT more as a percentage of income than the "rich" in food, in drink, in cable TV, in insurance, in energy, in housing, in clothing, in everything, including total taxes. That's because there is a minimum standard of living established for the middle and lower middle class which eats up a high percentage of the yearly budget. Those core expenses are much higher as a percentage of income than taxes are.

Very rich people have more disposable income, by definition, and therefore spend less as a percentage of total income on core expenses. But their tax burden as a percentage of their income is typically a lot higher than their core expense burden.
