I really doubt that fencing would slow them down. I have seen them climb a chain link fence, so I'm sure they could climb that stuff.

An idea I'd try would be similar to what Oral suggested earlier. You might go to a large lithographer in your area and ask if they'd give you used printing plates. These would have to be from a bigger press, so the plate could wrap around the trunk of your trees. Probably 20 x 26, or larger. These are aluminum and you could wrap them with duct tape to hold them around the tree.
