As I understand it, bin Laden's family fortune is huge and that Osama has been cut off.

YOU understand wrong.

Bin Laden inherited an estimated $70 Million in 1968 when his dad died. In the ensuing years, he invested wisely and made many tens of millions on construction contracts. In the early 90s, he made even more money on contracts working in Sudan, funded in significant part by the Iranians and Saddam. During that time he also received a "gift" of 1,000,000 acres of land in Eastern Africa.

While he does not receive money from his family today, he was wealthy and a shrewd investor. There is every reason to expect his fortune today is far, far into the 100s of millions.
