Fresno State won the College World Series with a masterful pitching performance in last night's 6-1 victory over Georgia. This was a real Cinderella story and lots of fun to watch at the CWS.

BTW, I am biased, as at least two of my cousins graduated from Fresno, not to mention my Aunt, my Mother's twin sister, who took a Bachelors and Masters from Fresno. I never attended the school, choosing the cooler climate of the state school in Hayward.

It was the first national championship for any of Fresno State's men teams. Fresno is one of the smaller state colleges and, in the past, has been overshadowed, athletically, by CS Fullerton and CS Long Beach. They have made the sports pages a few times with their football team, but the baseballers are the first national champs for the school.

This is to take nothing away from Georgia. They had an off night against a hot pitcher, but their best player got a homer and their closer, considered the best in the country, pitched a good inning after it was too late. These guys deserve a lot of credit, too.
