Actually the lack of a modern universal health insurance program is what killed the American auto industry.

Since the baggage of health insurance fell to the manufacturer, they could not negotiate for affordable labor rates and their costs prevented them from competing.

Be interesting to see if we as a nation will ever figure this out or if we merely bleed to death feeding the vultures.
