having played the game in college - quite frankly I think she's taking one hell of risk if her team is at a high level of play. People get their midsections blown out all the time forming a line blocking penalty kicks around the 18. Players get kneed in the stomach all the time or blows to the kidneys from behind - plus diving for headers.

How long will she plan to play? - I would assume you'd lose a step as you gain more weight.

I wouldn't come at it as an emotional matter...just a practical matter...or if her performance changes, then bench her...probably in the first couple of months barring any serious injury, it wouldn't make much difference.

And, this may be a US thing, but I would definitely have her sign a waiver indemnifying the league and all it's officials.
