Don't switch to electric heat

Vermont utilities urge consumers against switching to electric heat

June 25, 2008: 03:43 PM EST

NEW YORK (Associated Press) - Vermont's 21 electric utilities are joining to urge consumers not to try to beat the high price of oil and other heating fuels by switching to electric heat.

"E-21," a consortium of power companies ranging from Central Vermont Public Service Corp. to the 700-customers Village of Jacksonville Electric Company, say current electricity prices may look competitive with other fuels, but that may not remain the case for the long term.

They also say they're worried that growing use of electric heat could cause winter demand spikes, requiring the companies to buy expensive power on the wholesale spot market.

And they're worried about the capacity of the power grid, which is already at its limit in some places, to accommodate that increased demand.
