Bingo.

The govt would be the sole HMO "negotiating" against no competitors.

With the government becoming the sole customer of health care, or the largest customer by far, what's to prevent the government from basically dictating terms to the health-care industry?

The customer of the government would be the voters. And yes, some things might change through negotiation with providers and drug companies... so we might be able to approach the same per capita cost as the rest of the industrialized world... 50% of what we currently pay.

Which would "save" medicare. And free up a lot of money for other purposes.
