Snow is full of air, which is the good insulator. Your description of igloos is much as I recall from my history lessons from Donald Duck/Uncle Scrooge comics.

If I remember rightly, in one Donald Duck comic they even built them out of new-fangled white stuff which they cut out like polystyrene, but that wasn't the material. Google probably has references to that comic.
