See how General Petraeus has some good ideas, using cash to win wars is as old as the hills.
<When the USA made the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, Napoleon wanted cash because of the war with Britain. So he got $3 million in gold as the down payment, with the balance financed by Baring of London and Hope of Amsterdam. >

The USA won the war, without firing a shot, acquiring Louisiana for a bargain price so the others could fight each other, using debt, just as they do now, to cover the balance.

Selling weapons to the British would even get the money back, if not during that war, then in later wars.

Gold is so century before last though. Now, the USA just uses dollars, pixelated and emailed. That's much easier than gold.

The Louisiana purchase was 828,000 square miles, a nice patch of land. Too bad we couldn't buy Canada too, while the British were preoccupied with the French. We did try to invade and conquer Canada in 1812, assuming it would be a "cake walk". But it wasn't. Oh well...
