Keep in mind that even the iPod success was primarily due to the availability of cheap money in the form of HELOCs etc. Plus the housing bubble added to the wealth effect, which resulted in higher consumer retail sales numbers in general. So, even if a company were to come up with the next generation miracle consumer product, there is no guarantee of success this time around. Not after the housing bubble has burst and oil is making new highs and gasoline is expected to break the $5 barrier in a matter of months if not weeks.
