First, I will point out to you that Marx and the Malthusianism (which you're calling consumerism) have nothing to do with one another. Marx despised Malthus and his ideas.

Second, population growth has stopped in many countries and is slowing in others. There is no reason to think the worlds population will expand indefinately. Society after society has reduced its population growth as they've become wealthier.

Given that the earth isn't going to have a runaway human population, very few if any resources are ever going to run out. Food we can grow more of. Metals we can reclaim. Fossil fuels could run out eventually, though we have other forms of energy available when that happens.

Hard to believe I'm telling this to you given recent discussions about oil and alternative energy.
