I agree with the Darwin assessment.

There were others who realized the concept of natural selection, but only Darwin had the methodology to explain the process in a way that stood up to challenge. First of all, Darwin was able to place his work within the context of the religion of the time because he had studied at the seminaries before turning his mind toward naturalism. He also finished extensive experiments to determine such things as how far a seed can float and still germinate. This meant that when the idea was released to the public it was ready to be defended and explained, and not attacked on trivial grounds.

Of course Lincoln was a good egg too.
