It shows what can be done without making the engine more efficient, imagine what that car could do if the engine were more efficient. I don't believe you can carburate a diesel, but I suspect the vortex both atomised the fuel into a finer vapor, and slightly compressed the air. I would suspect that a combination of improvements in the injectors and compressors could achieve much the same efficiency improvements.

We in America see almost none of the more efficient diesel cars you have in Europe, it too is an area we need to improve in.
