Gun manufacturers insist that these deaths are not their fault, preferring to pin the blame on criminals and irresponsible dealers. They have fiercely resisted even minimal restrictions on sales and have simultaneously washed their hands of responsibility for this "collateral damage."

What a stupid article - gun makers are the most heavily regulated industry in the country. No other product made has a serial number and tracked from manufacturer to end user and records keep at every point of sale including the fact that only licensed dealers can be involved at every point. The customer themselves must even pass a background check.

The trouble is this still does nothing to reduce crime as criminals continue to break the laws no matter how many things you make illegal.

2nd amendment has been removed from national debate by two parties because vast parts of this country will not hear of restrictions on gun ownership any greater than what exists today. As a city boy, i a regret this development along with the SCOTUS decision and the obama flip flop. But i understand it--if obama indeed is to have a 50 state strategy he will have to win some of the gun states. And to do that, he needed to opt out of public financing, another huge flip flop, again which i fully understand. To be a transformational president, unlike bush, you have to pile up those electoral votes and have a mandate upon taking office. Obama thinks big and i like that too. When you are a jaded old political junkie like me, you learn to love the flip flopper with a plan.
