The fact that the relatively cheap diesel is now selling at higher prices than unleaded is possibly a demand issue; and the result of diesel being slightly more energy efficient than gas.
And demand for diesel is way up. In Europe about 70% of all new cars have diesel engines. This hasn´t been the case a decade ago. Historically those cars have been more expensive and they sold well because the lower operating costs have been touted back in the days when a litre diesel sold 10c below gas. Since, this advantage has been reversed.

Here is a Lupo 3L going 120 miles per hour on a German highway (fully legal), having to slow down when approaching a Porsche.

I really like the car - unfortunately, not many cars like that are being built, because oil is still too cheap to make it a really good business.
