Of course, they make everyone nervous. All of us were raised with the specter of thermonuclear Armageddon. However, the facts are very different from the Hollywood hype. Nuclear power plants are safe and much more technologically advanced. Current nukes are meltdown proof, but don't be surprised if the hype media doesn't tell you that. Nuclear has to be part of the solution. There is no silver bullet. We need a range of energy options and we need to put them all into the mix to get off the carbon and oil.
