Carter got the Vietnam War debt dumped on him, together with its accompanying inflation, manufacturing slowdown and a near bankrupt US government. On top of that he got the plight of the Shah and the Arab blowback against us for supporting Israel after their humilating military defeat. But remember it was Carter who was the first to get the Israelis and Arabs to shake hands. He was a great peacemaker. Pity he didn't have more time, and had to deal with all the problems he inherited. Also a pity his hostage rescue mission went down in a sand storm (or got sabotaged by Ollie North).
