Another issue on share splits used to be keeping the price below $100 because the brokerage fees on odd lots were very high compared to round lots of 100 (or multiples thereof). So more people could buy 100 shares of a $35 stock than could buy 100 shares of a $500 stock. This created more interest in the stock and tended to create demand thereby tending to raise the price.

Now that most of us pay tiny commissions for on-line trades this is really not such a big issue any more.
