Property taxes and maintenance costs get paid by renters anyway, sure not directly but its not like the land lords are running a charity. They pass along their costs. And as other replies mentioned you have a tax break.

Which isn't to say that buying a house is always good (as those who bought in overheated markets recently found), you might get depreciation in price rather than appreciation, and you have to borrow and pay interest on that borrowing. But anyone who has had a 475% increase, even in just nominal dollar terms, since 1999 has come out well ahead of the game.
