Immediately after the Court decided that the Second Amendment gives citizens the right to carry firearms, their approval rating jumped to 34%, a rise of 8% over the period of just a few days. The percentage of Americans who were giving the Supreme Court a good or excellent rating was actually steadily going down for about a month, going from 41% to 31% two weeks before the gun decision, to 26% right before it. Surprisingly, the up turn seems to be pretty much across the board, with 8% of the Republicans, 2% of the Democrats and 3% of the independents giving the court an excellent rating, 35% of the Republicans, 25% of the Democrats and 27% of the independents give the court a good rating. The feelings of the conservatives are almost exactly that of the Republicans and the moderates and liberals are just about the same as the Democrats and independents. Over all , the Republicans and independents opinion of the Supreme Court has gone up and the Democrats has stayed about the same, which for this court, is a major achievement. As for the gun control decision itself, 63% agreed and 25% disagreed. The Supreme Court is considered important by more Americans than ever before. John McCain has already stated that he will appoint conservative justices, if the opportunity arises during his presumptive Presidential term and he may not have known it at the time, but this could play a big part in his chances for election because 61% say who a candidate would pick for the Supreme Court is a Very important, 27% Somewhat important and just 8% Not a very important factor in who they would vote for in November. This seems to be the only popular decision that the court has made recently. Right before this, they struck down local laws that would allow the death penalty for anyone convicted of raping a child. If course, the Supreme Court hears and rules on many more cases than ever get written up in the news. We only hear about the high profile ones. As for Barack Obama he is concerned about a Supreme Court that is stacked in favor of the powerful at the expense of the powerless - too use his own words and as for his stance on the gun control issue, he has stated that he believes that citizens have the right to own guns, but with strict regulations is place. * * *
