You have out your finger precisely on why it took hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes, er, I mean PAC donations, to get those large SUVs exempted from passenger safety laws.

I once reviewed some extensive statistics on accidents by automotive type. One of the most interesting statistics was comparing Mercedes C, E, and S types.

The 350 S has about half the single car accidents as the 500 S.

The 350 being bought by middle managers, the 500s by the hi-rollers with more money.

There were some similar numbers for the E types.
