A sacrifice is any play in which the current batter advances one or more runners that are already on base while recording an out. For example: a runner is at first base in a one run game in the late innings with no outs. The hitter comes to the plate and tries to bunt down the first or third base line in order to advance the runner to second base. The hitter and manager know there is a low percentage of the hitter getting onto base safely, however the advantage of having a runner in scoring position outweights the loss of an out.
