The lifestyle is glamorized because for a segment of the population the only alternatives seems to be burger flipping. We could start by not denigrating a respectable occupation like burger flipping and encourage jobs, education, family etc - hollywood and the music biz need to stop glamourizing the gang lifestyle and end the "hate speech" or objectification in the songs they release. Instilling hope and providing alternatives are the only viable options I see - simply making things illegal and arresting people has not shown to be very effective. In the end there will always be some level of criminality - what level we accept I suppose is the real question.
