JF, > As pretty much a lifelong fiscal conservative, I think I understand traditional conservatism better than you do.

More like a deficit hawk than a fiscal conservative.

Double yawn. Every election year, "lifelong Republicans" say they are abandoning the Republican party this year because how terrible the GOP has gotten. Its just bogus Democratic propaganda. Stupid too.

I hear a lot more talk about would-be Obama voters being pissed about his chronic flip-flopping -- most recently, on the FISA issue, but the list of flip-flops is staggering.

Now, I realize the liberals are going to vote for Obama regardless of how much he flip-flops, but I don't know of any conservatives who would consider voting for Obama.

Yesterday, my cousin, who has been a Yellow Dog for 30 years, told me there is no way in hell he votes for Obama -- he wanted to vote for Hillary, but Obama is just too much of a liar for him. I think if HE is abandoning the Dems this year, there are going to be others.

No, it's real Republican propaganda, backed up by the polls, registrations and the last congressional elections. You are in denial.

This time its real, huh? I recall hearing the same claims - someone saying (in an internet post, callin to a radio show, letter to editor) all my friends who are lifelong Republicans are voting Democrat this time and always on some variation on the theme that the GOP has just gotten too mean or too corrupt.

Liberals like to lecture conservatives about how they're not really conservative. As if liberals care about who is a true conservative. As if a liberals definition of conservatism mattered to anyone. More bogus liberal propaganda.

As pretty much a lifelong fiscal conservative, I think I understand traditional conservatism better than you do.

"Fiscal conservative"!

Isn't that one of the arguments for higher taxes. Let's be "fiscal conservatives".

Is slashing defense spending a traditional conservative position? Is opposing the baby born alive law consistent with traditional conservatism? Is seeking support from people who ally themselves with America's enemies* consistent with traditional conservatism?

But this kinda thing does show something - its an implicit acknowledgement that the conservative "brand" has value in America. Thats true. America is a center-right country.

Used to be... you guys have shit on the brand.

I noticed a lot of the new Democrats elected in '04 ran as conservatives. We'll see how that works out. As it is, they're the junior guys in Congress - the folks they put in charge are old liberal dinosaurs like Pelosi, Waxman.

And "liberal" isn't the label it used to be... lot's of very proud self proclaimed liberals. I would rather be called liberal than Neo.

Good. You're a liberal.
